Research Fields

Protein Biochemistry, Cancer Biology, Anticancer drug discovery, Nanomedicine, Molecular Biology.

Research interests

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. For the treatment of cancer besides surgery, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, immunotherapy, chemotherapy etc. are used. Chemotherapy and some other techniques have severe side effects and to solve the problems, scientists are trying to find out alternative ways and less toxic and more effective drugs. For those purposes, several therapeutic proteins, nanoparticles, and small molecules are now using in this laboratory to check anticancer activity against breast, colorectal, lung and hepatocellular carcinoma, cervical cancer cell lines The potent anticancer agents are subjected for the elucidation of molecular mechanism against the cancer cell lines. Finally, the effective samples are used against the very rapidly growing Ehrlich ascites carcinoma cells in vivo in Swiss albino mice.

Scientific contributions

(1) During Ph.D studentship in Japan, hypermobile water around the actin and acto-myosin subunit-1 was discovered for the first time that plays a great role in the chemo-mechanical energy transduction during muscle contraction (Biophysical Journal, 2003, 85: 3154–3161).

(2) Several novel lectins were purified from plant sources at our laboratory at the University of Rajshahi. Some of them showed potent anticancer effects against Ehrlich ascites carcinoma cell and human cancer cell lines. Anticancer mechanism-related research at the molecular level (cell cycle analysis, study of apoptosis by fluorescence microscope and expression of apoptosis-related genes) was started first time in Bangladesh by our research group (led by me) (Ref. Phytomedicine 2013, 15;20(14):1288-96, on the basis of PubMed).

(3) In the council meeting of the 5th Asia Pacific Protein Association (APPA) conference in Thailand, it became possible for me to convince the councilors of APPA due to the great effort of our research group (led by me). As a result, Bangladesh got the full membership status of APPA.

(4). Biogenic silver nanoparticles-related research work has also been started for the first time in Bangladesh (Journal of Nanoparticles. Volume 2016, Article ID 6898926) by our research group (led by me)  and the article (Kabir et al., Journal of Molecular and Cellular Medicine, 2020, 24(22):13223-13234) representing the first paper in the world on the effect of biogenic silver nanoparticles against any stem cancer cells (On the basis of PubMed).
