Academic Profile of Professor Dr. Md. Ajijur Rahman
Professor Dr. Md. Ajijur Rahman is a distinguished academic, researcher, and public health advocate serving as a full Professor in the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Rajshahi (RU), one of the leading public research universities in Bangladesh. With a career spanning nearly two decades in academia and research, he has established himself as one of the most internationally recognised pharmacists and microbiologists in Bangladesh, with particular expertise in antimicrobial resistance (AMR), integron biology, functional metagenomics, and natural product-based antibiotic discovery.
Academic Background and Training
Dr. Rahman laid the foundation of his academic career at the University of Rajshahi, where he achieved the distinction of First Class First positions in both his Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm, 2004) and Master of Pharmacy (MPharm, 2005) degrees — a remarkable academic record that earned him the Rajshahi University Prize and, later, the Madar Bux Hall Gold Medal. His MPharm thesis focused on the isolation and identification of Streptomyces species from Bangladeshi soil and the characterisation of their secondary metabolites, laying the groundwork for his enduring interest in antibiotic-producing microorganisms.
In 2013, he was awarded the prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, UK — one of the most competitive international academic scholarships — to pursue doctoral studies at University College London (UCL), currently ranked 9th in the world by QS World University Rankings 2025. Under the supervision of Professor Peter Mullany and Dr. Adam Roberts at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute, he investigated the presence of integrons, gene cassettes, and cassette-encoded antibiotic resistance genes within the human oral metagenome. His doctoral thesis, titled "Detection and Characterisation of Integrons, Gene Cassettes and Cassette-Located Antibiotic Resistance Genes in the Human Oral Metagenome", was passed without any corrections in September 2017 — a testament to the rigour and quality of his research.
Following his doctorate, Dr. Rahman returned to the University of Rajshahi as an Associate Professor before undertaking a Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), UK, in 2022. At LSTM — one of the world's foremost institutions for tropical infectious disease research — he worked on the construction of multiple metagenomic libraries in E. coli and B. subtilis to screen for novel antibiotic resistance genes, further deepening his expertise in functional metagenomics and resistance gene discovery. He was promoted to the rank of full Professor in May 2023.
Research Expertise and Contributions
Dr. Rahman's research programme is broad, interdisciplinary, and of direct relevance to global public health. His primary areas of investigation include:
Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and Integron Biology: He is one of the few researchers in Bangladesh with specialised training in integron biology and functional metagenomics. His landmark study published in Scientific Reports (2020, Q1, IF: ~5.0) characterised novel integron-encoded variants of D-alanine-D-alanine ligase that confer high-level resistance to D-cycloserine, an antibiotic used in the treatment of drug-resistant tuberculosis. This work, conducted in collaboration with UCL and King's College London, has important implications for understanding resistance mechanisms against last-resort antibiotics.
Metagenomics and Mobile Genetic Elements: His collaborative work on the detection of novel integrons in human saliva metagenome, published in PLoS ONE (2016, Q1) with equal first-author contribution, was among the earliest studies to characterise mobile resistance elements within the human oral microbiome. He also contributed to the development of The Transposon Registry, published in Mobile DNA (2019, Q1, IF: 4.616), an internationally important bioinformatics resource cataloguing transposable elements.
Antibiotic Drug Discovery from Natural Sources: Dr. Rahman has a sustained programme of research on antibiotic-producing bacteria, particularly Streptomyces species isolated from Bangladeshi soil, river, and marine sediments. His team has isolated and characterised multiple novel strains with activity against multidrug-resistant pathogens, and several of these studies have been published in BMC Microbiology and the Bangladesh Pharmaceutical Journal.
AMR Surveillance and Pharmacy Practice: Recognising the need to understand antibiotic use patterns at the national level, he has led research on the AMR landscape in Bangladesh. His 2024 paper in the Journal of Infection and Public Health (Q1, IF: 4.7) — one of his most policy-relevant works — analysed Bangladesh's antibiotic market using the WHO AWaRe (Access, Watch and Reserve) classification framework, providing critical insights into national antibiotic stewardship. He is currently supervising a PhD student assessing antibiotic use and resistance patterns in a major Bangladeshi hospital.
Medicinal Mushrooms and Functional Foods: More recently, Dr. Rahman has expanded his research portfolio to include the medicinal and cosmeceutical applications of indigenous Bangladeshi mushrooms and the probiotic properties of traditional fermented foods. His 2026 paper in Food and Humanity (Scopus Q2) examined mushroom awareness and consumption patterns in Bangladesh, and ongoing PhD work is exploring the in-vitro and ex-vitro cultivation of mushroom varieties with therapeutic potential.
Computational and Bioinformatics Research: He has engaged in cutting-edge computational pharmacology, contributing as a co-author to a 2025 pan-cancer analysis of CDC7 using machine learning and molecular modelling approaches, published in Computers in Biology and Medicine (Q1, IF: 7.0, Cite Score: 11.7).
Overall, his publication record spans more than 40 peer-reviewed articles in Scopus-indexed journals across Q1, Q2, and Q3 tiers, with his work cited over 800 times internationally (Scopus ID: 55312558500; ORCID: 0000-0003-3783-7835).
Awards and International Recognition
Dr. Rahman's contributions to science have been recognised at both national and international levels. The most prestigious of these is the FEMS-ASM Makela-Cassel Award for Early Career Scientists (2016), jointly conferred by the Federation of European Microbiology Societies (FEMS) and the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) — one of the most competitive early-career awards in the global microbiology community. He also received the ASM Student and Postdoctoral Travel Award (2016) to present his research at ASM Microbe in Boston, USA, and the SGM Travel Grant (2015) to attend the Annual Conference of the Society of General Microbiology in Birmingham, UK. He has been a funded participant at the prestigious BSAC Antimicrobial Resistance Workshops on three consecutive occasions (2013, 2014, 2015) and won the Best Oral Presenter Award at the National Pharma Conference at Jessore University of Science and Technology in July 2025.
Administrative Leadership and Institutional Contributions
Beyond research and teaching, Dr. Rahman has made significant contributions to the institutional life of the University of Rajshahi. He served as Director of the Office of International Affairs (December 2023 – August 2024), leading the university's international engagement and academic collaboration activities. He has been a member of the Academic Council, Faculty Committees, the Central Admission Committee, and the University Grants Commission's Curriculum Evaluation Committee, among numerous other institutional roles. He has also served as Member Secretary for several high-profile university publications and events, including the Convocation Publication and the 71st Anniversary Research Output Display.
Research Supervision
Dr. Rahman is an active and committed research supervisor, currently guiding four PhD students and one MPhil student as Principal Supervisor, with research topics spanning hospital AMR surveillance, endodontic biomaterials with phytochemical synergy, skin graft microbiology, renal stone causative organisms, and mushroom cultivation. He has previously supervised eight postgraduate Master's thesis students, producing research on Streptomyces, probiotics, antibiotic resistance in E. coli, and phytochemical-mediated resistance induction.
Professional Affiliations and Accreditation
Dr. Rahman holds membership in several prestigious national and international professional bodies, including the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), the Society for General Microbiology (SGM), the British Society of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (BSAC), the Commonwealth Pharmacists Association (CPA), and the Bangladesh Association of Commonwealth Scholars and Fellows (BACASF). He is accredited as an A-Grade Pharmacist by the Pharmacy Council of Bangladesh (Registration No. A-2764) and is a Life Member of the Rajshahi University Alumni Association.
Public Engagement and Science Communication
Deeply committed to translating science into public understanding, Dr. Rahman has authored over 35 opinion columns and sub-editorials in leading Bangladeshi national newspapers and online portals, including Dhaka Post, Daily Jugantor, Kaler Kantho, and Barta24. His writings have addressed critical public health issues including AMR, rational drug use, vaccine safety, pharmacy education reform, COVID-19 therapeutics, and the role of pharmacists in the healthcare system.
